Discovering April 1550: A Timeless Boutique Gem in Ljubljana

by Alexandra Bocheliuk, Content Manager & Hotel Researcher
Located on a serene cobbled street behind St. Jacob's Church, the hotel is housed in a 16th-century lovingly restored building. Originally built as a residence for craftsmen and their families, the hotel still retains the spirit of its past, with the architecture and design paying homage to its origins.

April1550 Boutique Hotel stands as a living testament to Ljubljana's rich history. The hotel's name, April1550, is a tribute to the building's mid-16th-century roots. The restoration was handled carefully, preserving original elements such as historical wooden ceilings and beautifully weathered exposed brickwork.

April1550 takes its connection to local craftsmanship seriously. From the bespoke furniture to the handmade tableware, every element of the hotel has been sourced from the local community. The design perfectly balances simplicity and sophistication, incorporating natural materials like solid wood, linen, cotton, and wool. These high-quality materials are used throughout the hotel's rooms, creating a calming, nature-inspired, soothing, and luxurious palette.

One of the hotel's most enchanting features is its secret garden, a hidden oasis that offers a tranquil escape from the city's hustle and bustle. Tucked away at the back of the property, this serene space is perfect for reading a book, sipping a refreshing drink, or simply soaking in the peaceful atmosphere.

The hotel's communal spaces are equally inviting. A flexible lounge serves as a "living room" for guests, offering a warm and welcoming environment where visitors can gather for a meal, relax with a glass of wine, or even use the space for workshops.

One of the standout experiences at April 1550 is breakfast, a true celebration of Slovenian culinary traditions. Every morning, guests are treated to a delicious breakfast made from the freshest seasonal and local ingredients, all sourced directly from handpicked farmers and artisans.

And it's not just the food that stands out — the tableware is a work of art. The dishes and cups are handmade by local Slovenian potter Barbara Skubic, whose stunning craftsmanship adds a unique touch to every meal. Her pottery studio in the nearby village of Zaplana is a destination in its own right, offering workshops for both beginners and experienced potters who wish to try their hand at this ancient craft.

Whether you're enjoying the comforts of the cozy communal areas or taking a pottery class at Barbara Skubic's nearby studio, the hotel fosters a spirit of mindfulness and creativity, encouraging guests to slow down, appreciate their surroundings, and engage with local culture in a meaningful way.
